Frequently Asked Questions

What is music therapy?

Music therapy is a clinical and evidence-based therapy using music to address non-musical goals, such as language skills, social skills, academic skills, and gross and fine motor skills.

What does a music therapy session look like?

Music therapy is client-centered. There is no one-size-fits-all treatment plan. Aside from a hello and goodbye song that signals the beginning and the end of each session, a music therapy session can include dancing, singing, instrument playing, singing & reading books, finger plays, & rhythm songs, music listening, action songs, calming songs, and more. Music therapists focus on each client’s preferred songs & music. And most importantly, the music therapist will meet the client where they are that day, whether they are focused and ready to learn or they need move their bodies or they need to breathe & calm down.

What instruments do you use?

Music therapists do a lot of singing. I use the guitar and piano mostly. I can also incorporate the ukulele and autoharp. These are all available for clients to explore, along with a wide variety of hand percussion instruments, such as triangles, jingle bells, the cabasa, the cocorico, a xylophone, a variety of drums, a tambourine, and more.

What music do you play?

Because music therapy is highly individualized, what music is played depends on each client’s preferred music. On any given day - and often within one session! - I am singing children’s songs like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Disney princess songs and Queen and the Paw Patrol theme song and many more. I also sing songs tailored to the skills we are targeting; for example, songs that focus on taking turns or following directions or emotion regulation, etc.

Who do you serve?

I serve a variety of populations: Autism Spectrum, developmental delays, Down Syndrome, Williams Syndrome, speech & language delays, speech & language disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Attention Deficit Disorder, hyperactivity, emotional & behavioral disorders

How long is each session?

I recommend 30 minutes. If appropriate for the client, 45 minute sessions are available.

How often are the sessions?

Once per week will be the most successful for building and maintaining rapport and skills. Every other week is also possible if times are available.

How do I schedule a session?

Contact Kristin. We will schedule a free 15-minute phone consultation to assess your child’s and your family’s needs. We will then find a time that works for everyone’s schedules.

How do I pay for services?

1) Private pay or out-of-pocket. Clients will be invoiced at the beginning of every month.

2) OhioRISE: Contact your caseworker and ask about music therapy. Mention Kristin Kummer or Kids Create Collective.

3) Your health insurance company may accept music therapy services as an out-of-network provider. It will be applied to your deductible. Call your insurance company for details. I will provide a superbill at the end of each month of service. You can submit this superbill to your insurance company.

What is a superbill?

A superbill is a detailed, itemized receipt provided by a healthcare or mental health professional that patients can submit to their health insurance company to request out-of-network reimbursement.
